Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then located many other marked cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; investigators are presently not cognizant of any injuries in association with the incident," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.
A high-ranking official commented the vandalism rendered him stunned and required to be resolved quickly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
