European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
