The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
