Each time a major honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition completely in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
