US Attack on Venezuela Stokes Anxieties of Future Greenland Takeover.

Recent US-led military action in the South American nation and the seizure of its president have sparked worry regarding Washington's designs on Greenland. Followers of the ex-president's political movement have reportedly focused on the resource-rich landmass in the wake of the events in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Messages and Official Backlash

Merely hours following the initiation of the Caracas operation, a well-known right-wing commentator, who is the spouse of a high-ranking presidential adviser, posted a symbolic map. The graphic showed Greenland draped with the stars and stripes, with the cryptic caption: "SOON."

This blatant suggestion to absorb the resource-abundant land, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, provoked immediate and strong criticism from Denmark's officials.

"Denmark and the US are close allies and should continue to work together as such. American security is also the Arctic's and our security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "Our nation and the US collaborate to ensure security in the North."

The ambassador additionally highlighted that the kingdom had significantly increased its military budget recently, earmarking a substantial sum specifically for Northern and North Atlantic defence. "And yes, we demand full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Administrative Appointments and Strategic Interests

The tensions were further exacerbated by the previous naming of a US state governor as a representative to Greenland. The appointee had openly expressed gratitude to the president, stating it was an "privilege" to serve in a volunteer role to "make Greenland a part of the US."

Following the events in Venezuela, this envoy commended the president's decisive move, linking it to the wider "fight against narcotics."

Since returning to office, the US president has consistently alarmed European partners with his expressed desire in Greenland. The island is considered vitally important for national security and future resource extraction. It currently houses the northernmost US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Force

In a notable television appearance, the leader declined to exclude the resorting to military force to acquire Greenland. This stance comes amid growing great-power rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He characterized Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll value them... But we need that for global security."

Mounting Tensions and Local Resistance

In response to this persistent "rhetoric" of intent, Danish intelligence service took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "potential threat."

The prime ministers of both Greenland delivered a unified and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Surveys in Greenland reveals a complex picture. While a vast majority of the territory's residents desire independence from Denmark, there is simultaneously scant appetite to become part of the United States. The territory has had the option to seek sovereignty for many years.

Analyst View: A Plausible Threat?

Some analysts are now re-evaluating the likelihood of such a move. One policy director specializing in military analysis conceded she had once dismissed the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"Logistically, it would be feasible for the US to deploy a couple hundred or a couple thousand soldiers inside of Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could do anything about it," she observed.
